Johnny

Redeeming Love

Johnny is remembered as the young man who attempted to flee Duke with fourteen-year-old Angel. Their failed escape, undertaken for different reasons and followed by terrible consequences, becomes a measure of Angel’s distrust when Michael later offers her a way out.

Identity and Introduction

Johnny appears in Angel’s recollection of her first attempt to run away with a man. At fourteen, she was too inexperienced to recognize his ambitions. She remembers him as charming and glib, qualities that had made his apparent sincerity difficult to distinguish from genuine care.

The Failed Escape

Johnny and Angel each sought something different through their flight. He wanted to take something away from Duke and then use it; she wanted to escape Duke. Neither achieved what he or she wanted. They were brought back, and Angel recalls the terrible cost of the attempt, including the horror of what Duke did afterward. Her recollection also carries pity for Johnny.

Effect on Angel’s Later Choices

When Michael urges Angel to leave with him, she compares his apparent sincerity to Johnny’s. The earlier failure has taught her to suspect promises of freedom: she sees Michael as offering hope as bait and initially treats him as another man like Johnny. Yet Michael’s arrival revives the possibility of escape in her mind, even as fear and disbelief keep her from trusting it. Johnny’s brief role thus shapes the emotional stakes of Angel’s decision, though the evidence does not establish his later fate.
